Christmas rules

An upside down candy cane illustration made to look like a tick

Whether you like it or loath it, Christmas has come early this year. The John Lewis advert is out, Bublé is stirring from his slumber and mince pies are flying off the shelves at an alarming rate.

Christmas messaging provides an opportunity to get back in touch with clients, customers and followers. To let them know practical things like opening hours and holiday closures but it’s also an opportunity to inject some wit, charm and creativity into your messaging. We’ll all be subject to an avalanche of festive tidings next month so why not make yours stand out.

Don’t fall into the trap of going full-festive on the design though. It’s an opportunity to slightly stretch your brand guidelines, not to totally ignore them. Think merry and bright colour palette changes, a dusting of Christmas imagery or a play on winter wording. The core look and feel of your visual identity should still feel the same as your existing marketing just with a sprinkle of festive cheer. If you’re still looking for a little inspiration here are some examples of our take on season’s greetings.

Festive window display

Our suitably wintery window display for our estate agent client Homesite. We designed simple snowflakes (with a key-inspired twist) cut from white vinyl and dotted across the glass-fronted office. Read more about it here.

A copywriter’s correspondence

A prose filled post-out from Copywriter Yarn. Each year we switch the usual pink and blue colour palette for a more festive hue, create some new Christmassy icons and bind it all together in an A6 booklet which is posted out to clients, collaborators, friends and family. See the first and second edition. We’re cracking on with the next version as we write this.

Two birds one snowball

In 2021 our own Christmas mail out coincided with the move to our very own studio in a renovated coach house in the heart of Leamington Spa. We designed a two-sided card to celebrate landing in our new nest along with an animation for digital marketing.
